World Food Thursdays
An international culinary adventure
Country No. 39: Morocco
May 2018
Restaurant: Comptoir Mezze, Kensal Rise
Attendees: Kim, Lee, Poppy, Maor, Oz
“Very soon I am not going to be around and when I am gone, I want you to take over” Thankfully words not uttered by my dad, alas not uttered by my CEO but instead by Ben to me (lee) referencing the temporary handover of world food reportage.
Congrats to Ben and Ellen on the safe arrival of the beautiful Chloe. Unfortunately the other absentees were less celebratory with Eoghan and Callum nursing a poorly Jimmy and Becky looking after Sadie whilst PK beat up the mum who accidentally(?) hurt her foot.
So the Moroccan adventurers were Kimberley, Lee, Poppy, Oz (setting a new youngest attendee record that will be hard to beat) and Maor, AKA the Moroccan who has never actually been to Morocco.
Irrespective of depleted numbers two traditions remain constant. Those who arrived on time got pre starters and those who arrived on time consisted solely of a punctually lonely lee.
The pre starter was a delicious Zaalock, in essence a spicy aubergine hummusesque dish. The starters were the stars of the show with a spicy sausage Merguez, Cheese Briwat (pastries filled with cheese and spinach) and Chicken Pastilla (more pastry based cuisine) proving to be a lot more intriguing and tasty than the better known Tagine and cous cous main course combo.
Inspite of a crying Oz, relations between the adults at the table were so harmonious they were beginning to sound like a Berber Shop Quartet. With that in mind desert was ordered albeit a small Baklava......made up of more pastry of course......and mint tea.
At the end of the meal there was a failed attempt to get Oz to pick a card and further failed attempts for the assembled adults to choose a viable country. Ultimately patience prevailed and next up we’re off to Sri Lanka.
